Dr. Retno S. Wardani, completed her ear, nose and throat training at the University of Indonesia in 1998. Since 2000 Dr Wardani’s area of interest is rhinology, especially regarding the pathogenesis of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps through research in nasal immunity and inflammation. She has also taught the philosophy and surgical techniques of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) in Indonesia and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries. Dr Wardani was awarded her PhD degree with research entitled ‘The Gene Expression Profile of Nasal Polyps in Response To Endoscopic Simple Polypectomy and Intranasal Glucocorticoid’. Through this research, she improved the understanding of the protective role of inflammation in dealing with microbes and environmental insults. Dr Wardani is a passionate teacher whose aim is to see the FESS intervention being performed in all 200 district hospitals in Indonesia. Her parallel mission is to continue to run the annual Jakarta International FESS (JiFESS) Course in both Bahasa Indonesia and English as official languages to maximise its appeal to all Indonesian doctors.
